Why does my Bug have no hole in the center of the drain plate?
Around 1971 VW discovered that the dealership mechanics were changing the oil in a customers Bug, Ghia, Type 3 or Thing by removing the drain plug. The technicians were frequently failing to remove the drain plate in order to clean the oil pickup mesh filter. Volkswagen was worried this would lead to warranty issues, so they installed plates without the drain plug. This was not popular with the mechanics because changing the oil became a messy job.
If you have no drain plug on your drain plate but would like one you can purchase 353026, or if you prefer billet aluminum 300200 or 319908.
Tech Note: You can easily tell if you have a dual relief case or a single relief case by looking at the bottom of your engine case, there are nickel-sized caps with a flat screw driver slot facing toward the ground. If there is only one, it is single relief case, two is a dual relief case. One plug is located toward the front of the engine near the oil pump and the other is located back by the rear main-flywheel.
