How to Re-adjust Your 1984-1996 Corvette Windshield Wiper Arms
The Windshield wipers on the 1984-1996 Corvette often jump, skip, hit the middle of the windshield, and in general are annoying! Although the 1995 wipers were changed somewhat, they still need that final adjustment. The Corvette wipers will periodically need an adjustment due to the down pressure on the blade's rubber strip while in the park position. Wipers have to create a wiping effect in order to remove all of the water on the windshield. If the blade does not wipe it will jump or skip on the windshield. About once a month or as needed, unsnap the blade from the arm by placing a flat screwdriver blade between the arm and the blade at the arm's end stud to the blade. Rotate the blade 180° and then reinstall it on the same arm (or if a 1995, on the opposite arm). This makes the blade last longer and it will have less drag on the windshield.
Now to adjust the travel distance of the wipers. Place the transmission in park or neutral and start the car. With the car running, turn the wipers on high and push the washer function. Now get out of the car and observe the wipers' travel pattern. You may get a little damp, so be careful. With the wipers on high speed and a wet windshield, the left wiper should come about one inch from the windshield post molding at the tip of the blade. The right wiper blade should come about one and one half inches from the tip of the right blade to the windshield post molding.
Shut off the wipers, turn off the engine, and remove be sure the wipers don't cycle while working on ther the cowl screen snap-out section, or the screen above wiper motor. (Caution: Do not let tools hit edge of windshield because it can easily be cracked.) Using a 10 mm socket on a quarter inch speed handle or socket extension, loosenthe right or left two nuts that hold the transmission arm to the motor arm. Just loosen the nuts. The arm end is slotted so there is a lot of adjustment area available. Adjust as necessary and re tighten the 10 mm nuts. Start the engine and recheck with the wipers on high speed and with a wet windshield.
Do this procedure as often as needed and your wiper arms won't hang-up or skip on the windshield. Also about every week or so use a good glass cleaner to clean the outside of the windshield and the rubber blades. This removes any road chemicals or oils and will make the blades last longer.
The 1995 style wiper blades and arms will retrofit all years back through the 1984. This new style helps keep the wipers in adjustment and stops a lot of the wiper blade skip on the windshield. When replacing the blades, be careful of inexpensive aftermarket blades. They often make the arms set too high and the blade or arm will then contact the hood thus knocking off paint.
