The fiber used in Mid America Motorworks molded Corvette carpet is a T6.6 nylon. Type T6.6 nylon is a harder fiber and is more durable, has a higher melt point, and has better light fast properties. The type T6.6 nylon is a more expensive product. The molecular structure of the type T6.6 nylon is tougher than the type 6 nylon.

GM specifies mostly T6.6 nylon and is the original fiber used in the Corvette as well as all vehicles prior to 1990.

Carpet Backing Materials

Foam Back Carpet

Foam Back Carpet is directly adhered to the carpet at the factory prior to cutting and binding. Foam backing allows for a plusher fitment and adds a level of sound deadening qualities to your carpet. Foam baking is typically about 1/4 - 3/8 inch in thickness.

Foil Back Carpet

Foil Back Carpet average thickness is 1/4" . A heat barrier with some acoustic advantages consisting of Jute Padding laminated with a Foil backing on one side. Most commonly used in all makes and models as a Heat Barrier

Jute Back Carpet

Just padding is used predominately under your carpet where your feet rest on the floor pans. This helps prevent the carpet from wearing out prematurely as the majority of the wear is where feet contact the carpet. Jute padding also helps prevent mildew by absorbing moisture and allowing it to wick out of the floor covering versus saturating your carpet.

Poly Back Carpet

Poly Back is the most economical and most common automotive carpet option. This is the same material that all discount carpet retailers offer. Poly Backing is a more flexible, plastic type backing that is easy to cut and fold for shipping. Our Poly Back carpet, also known as polyethylene backing is an economical replacement option, with a jute padding bonded to the bottom for comfort. The Poly Back carpet is made with the same quality carpet fibers, but will have a 1/16th inch plastic, more flexible backing than the Mass Backing. Please note that the fit of the Poly back carpet is the same as the mass back carpet

Mass Backing

Mass backing (trade name Keldex) is an approximately 45mil thick EVA material. It's a great sound and heat barrier and increases the overall look of the carpet after installation.

Mass Backing is a special upgraded backing that's bonded to the back of your vehicle's molded carpet. The material is a 45mil thick Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) that makes your interior carpet heavier, providing more sound protection and heat insulation than the standard backing. It also makes the installation process easier and gives your vehicle a more luxurious look once completely installed.

It can be applied to any piece of your carpet set that is molded. However, it cannot be applied to die cut pieces (such as flat cargo and flat side panels) or “cut and sewn” style carpeting. Around 1990, car manufacturers began to install mass backing as the standard backing. Therefore, 1990 and late model car owners are encouraged to purchase mass backing when replacing their car carpet if they wish to enjoy the same standards and level of comfort.

Since mass backing provides excellent sound and heat protection by itself, there's no need to install additional sound deadening material prior to laying down your carpet, which can save you time and money. Overall, mass backing creates a quieter, cooler, and more comfortable cabin for an all-around better driving experience.
