History of the Corvette Club Of Northern Delaware
It was April 26, 1973 when seven friends got together to talk about starting a Corvette Club in the Wilmington, DE area. They named the club they were forming “The Corvette Club of Northern Delaware”. The club had 25 members by the end of 1973. Membership quickly grew to over 100 members. (One of our current members attended the first official meeting of CCND.) Early activities included economy runs, caravans to events like the Dover Downs “Delaware 500” (NASCAR), rallyes, “Shop Talks”, dinner cruises, and of course, meetings. In 1974 CCND held its first Corvette show at our sponsoring Chevrolet dealership's facility. From that point on the club held shows every year. The 1978 show held at our local Concord Mall had 130 Corvettes entered with entrants from all of the surrounding states - one of the largest Corvette shows held on the East coast during that time period.
Membership has averaged from one hundred to two hundred members over the years. While we have had a fairly large turn-over in members, there always seems to be more folks wanting to join the club. The oldest car in the club is a beautiful 1956. As with most clubs today, we have a lot of C5, C6, C7, and C8's, but we also have C1, C2, C3, and C4's.
CCND was inducted into NCCC on March 8, 1980 when the President George Bukovsky and the new Governor Bob Cook made the trip to Louisville, Kentucky to attend the national governor's meeting. (At that time a member of the club had to attend a national governor's meeting in order for the club to join NCCC.) As a member of the East Region, we sanctioned shows and rallyes. As NCCC members we attended sanctioned shows, autocrosses and drags in our region, but never really had an active autocross or drag race group. We did enjoy having the 2022 national convention in Atlantic City, NJ (in our back yard).
We now have our 26th President and 175 members, most of whom attend activities. We had over 60 cars present when we took the “CCND-50” photo on one of our member's large lawn. Today, our members routinely attend dinner cruises, breakfasts twice a month, a great Holiday dinner, picnics, ice cream outings, and an annual several-day trip (see below).
Each year we have supported several local charities in addition to the NCCC charity. During the past several years, we have given to the Ministry of Caring, Adopt-A-Family, the YWCA Delaware Home-Life Management Center, and Stockings for Soldiers.
The first Saturday of each month (April through October) we have a very popular cruise-in at a local shopping center. In addition to upwards of 60 Corvettes, we often (weather cooperating) have several hundred other classic and collector cars attend. Again, proceeds from the 50/50 go towards support of our charities.
Six years ago, we started organizing an annual club member road trip. Destinations have included the quaint town of Wellsboro Pennsylvania, the Civil War battlefield at Gettysburg and the 690-acre estate of the 34th U.S. President, Dwight Eisenhower and his wife Mamie. Our 2021 four-day trip included stops at the Antietam National Battlefield at Sharpsburg, Maryland, the Wintergreen Resort in Virginia, and Poplar Wood, the summer home of Thomas Jefferson. Last year we had a great trip to the historic and fascinating little town of Jim Thorpe Pennsylvania, birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution. We chose Watkins Glen, NY for this year's destination to celebrate our club's 50th Anniversary. Forty-two club members made the four-day trip and enjoyed each other's company during the happy hours and group dinners each evening. The highlights of the trip included a visit to the beautiful and unique Watkins Glen State Park, wine tasting at Lakewood Vineyards, and driving our Corvettes three laps around the world-famous Watkins Glen International racetrack. We visited the amazing Corning Museum of Glass on the way home. The trip was a great opportunity to enjoy driving America's great sports car on some beautiful country roads with little traffic and to have a great time with our club members.
We believe that CCND today is as strong as it has ever been. We have loyal members who work to support the club and its activities. We have a lot of fun. And, we agree with the NCCC logo: “We joined for the car - We stay for the people”. (Not totally true - we still love our cars!) And, we are looking forward to another great 50 years!
If your club is celebrating its 50th anniversary (or longer) we'd love to hear from you! Contact us at clubs@mamotorworks.com with your club's history and we'll share your story.
