Tech Note: Air Cooled VW Pistons need to be installed in a specific position. This is usually marked on the top of the piston. Please be sure to install your new pistons with the arrow pointing towards the flywheel.
Tech Note: Cylinder Head Shims and Cylinder Spacers... The use of Cylinder Head Shims and Cylinder Spacers are one way of changing the compression ratio (CR) on your engine, the quality of today's gasoline dictates a lower CR on order to get the maximum life from your engine. Based on the octane available today a compression ratio greater than 8:1 (8.0 to 1) could be asking for engine problems, especially at sea level. The procedure for determining the CR of your engine is one that requires a high degree of technical knowledge involving the use of some specialty tools not normally found in the hobbyist's toolbox.
We would definitely recommend obtaining one of the technical reference books, a Cylinder Head CC measuring tool and Piston Deck Height Measuring Kit as in our 308341 How to Hot Rod Volkswagen Engines, 336148 Cylinder Head CC Measuring Tool and 340003 Piston Deck Height Measuring Tool.
