1950-1979 Ampco Top Engine Cylinder Lubricator Oiler Kit
The Air-Cooled Volkswagen Engine is a classic engineering marvel! It is simple, robust, understressed; but it does run hot, especially in hot climates. In Type I and II engines, the #3 cylinder tends to suffer most. If there is a failure, it is usually a burned exhaust valve in cylinder #3.
Lead in gasoline acted as a lubricant between Air-Cooled Volkswagen Engine Valves and Valve Seats. Modern unleaded gas/ethanol blends are very dry, with virtually no lubricating properties. Exhaust valve seat recession can result in a condition where the valve and seat materials adhere to and erode each other to which the valve will migrate up into the head. As this occurs, the valve stem to rocker tip clearance is reduced. If this clearance reduces to zero, the valve no longer closes which results in a burnt valve. This means compression, power loss, and ultimately a valve job and head replacement.
The AMPCO Volkswagen Lubricator Kit is supplied with an aluminum carburetor sandwich plate which accepts the oiler nozzle, along with new gaskets, longer carburetor studs, and nuts. Installation takes about one hour. Recommended lubricant is Marvel Mystery Oil which can be found at most local auto parts stores.
Helpful Hint: This kit works on both Single and Dual Carburetor Set Ups
