VW Steering Wheel Tech Tips

Air Cooled VW Steering Wheel diameter can have a dramatic effect on response time (how quickly the car turns when you turn the wheel), and in how hard the wheel itself is to turn. The larger the wheel diameter (most stock VW steering wheels are 16” / 40.5cm), the easier the wheel is to turn, but the slower the response time. The smaller the wheel diameter, the harder it is to turn the wheel, but the faster the response time. Other factors such as lowered suspension and larger tires contribute to hard steering and should be considered when choosing your new VW steering wheel.

Our Custom Steering Wheels range in diameters from 10” to 14” require the purchase of a Steering Wheel Hub Adapter to mount your new wheel. You may order these by year group or if your application is unknown, use the rule of 1960-1973 Beetles use a 40 Spline count 21mm Diameter Shaft and 1974-1979 Beetles use a 40 Spline count 17mm Diameter Shaft. Use these measurements to determine which hub adapter year group to use for your application requires the purchase of a Steering Wheel Hub Adapter to mount your new wheel.
