When doing a brake job on your Volkswagen Bus, you should always inspect the condition of the drum inner surfaces and both sides of the brake rotor for signs of wear and damage. This damage is found in the form of ridges, glazing, and/or grooves, which are usually the result of excessive heat and contact of the shoes or pads after the friction material is worn out or nonexistent. This type of wear requires the attention of a machine shop. Take your drums and/or rotors to your favorite shop and have someone there inspect them to determine if a lathe-turning operation is all that is necessary to bring them within specifi cations or if you need to buy new ones. The machine shop is also the place to have these same pieces checked for warping or out-of-round conditions. When you have your machined drums or rotors back, or your new ones from Mid America Motorworks, Inc., clean and repack the wheel bearing assemblies and replace the wheel seals.
